Moving into a new house is not the only option for families who need more living space. Investing in additions can be more cost-effective than purchasing a new property. Some of the most popular home additions include master bathrooms, family rooms, sunrooms, two-story additions and kitchen additions.
Here are questions to ask before adding onto your house.
What Kind of Space Do You Need?
Make a list of ideas for your project. You can get inspiration from home improvement websites, shows and magazines. For instance, if you’re considering adding a new room, write down how much space you wish to add and how it will be used. How much space would you need for your furniture and other features of the room? You also need to consider who will be using the space. Does the user of the room have special needs?
Will Your New Addition Match Your Home’s Structure?
Fitting room additions to the existing structure of your home can be a challenge. Exterior components, such as siding, windows and stonework, may be hard to match. In some cases, rooflines may also need to be adjusted to accommodate the addition.
Instead of blending the new space into your existing home, you can make a statement by going for a complementary material. Using contrasting siding or stone will make it seem that the new room has always been there.
How Much Do You Know About Your Potential Contractor?
Before hiring anyone for your project, obtain at least three estimates from different contractors. Doing so will give you an idea about the cost of your addition. Always do your research, ask for proof of insurance and license, and read reviews. It would also help to request references from their previous clients.
